Diploma Criteria
The table below sets out the diploma criteria (diploma system 5.1) and gives links to examples of where I feel I've met them.
Essential Criteria
1. Demonstrating design skill“The process of using permaculture design tools and processes to create working designs for a client or project"

How I meet it/where I evidence it
I have used a range of design tools:
Base maps: A productive Garden - p4; Church Fenton - p6 Overlays: A productive Garden -p8; Church Fenton - p11 Shadow Mapping: Lilac Tree Plan - p10; Headingley Garden - pp9-14 Zones: A Productive Garden - p13; Church Fenton - p13; Lilac Landscaping - p 13; Headingley Garden - p30; UK EPT Meeting - p16 Sectors: A productive Garden - p7; Church Fenton - p11; Headingley Garden pp8-20; EPT UK Meeting - p7, Permahaus - p24. I have also attempted to capture processes that emerged when a conscious design cycle was not applied from the outset of a project (the EPT partnership): OBREDIM and variants: Lilac Landscaping - p3 ; Lilac Landscape Team - p4 SADIM and variants: A Productive Garden, Church Fenton; Lilac Design Workshop - p2; Lilac Tree Plan; Headingley Garden; EPT UK Meeting - p3; Permahaus - p3. Emergent processes: EPT Partnership Designs I've produced for individual clients include the Church Fenton & Headingley gardens and Permahaus. The EPT UK Meeting served a number of client groups. Designs that I've produced for projects either for myself, or with a less defined client group include Lilac Landscaping, Lilac Landscape Team, Lilac Design Wokshop, Lilac Tree Plan, EPT Partnership. |
2. Applying permaculture in your own life"The process of using permaculture ethics, principles and design strategies to enhance the sustainability of your own life and household"
|
How I meet it/where I evidence it
The designs for LILAC Landscaping, Lilac Landscape Team, Lilac Design Workshop and LILAC Tree Plan show how I've applied permaculture to enhance my personal sustainability. They do this by contributing to the sustainability (both in terms of promoting productive communal landscaping, and nourishing social sustainability) of the low impact intentional community that I live in.
|
3. Applying permaculture to your work & projects
“The process of applying permaculture within a given situation to create new systems and resources."
|
How I meet it/where I evidence it
The Church Fenton and Headingley gardens were both examples of using permaculture at work. Both were site development projects delivered to paying clients of my Backyard Organics business.
The EPT Partnership project created a new pan-European network of permaculture teachers and supporting resources. The EPT UK meeting was a sub-design of this project, working towards and supporting the same aims. Permahaus was an interesting project that sought to demonstrate and promote the value of permaculture design as a complementary system to ecobuilding. |
Complementary Criteria
4. Dissemination
"The process of sharing your work and insights with other"
|
How I meet it/where I evidence it
My main dissemination activity has been my teaching.
I contributed my Productive garden design as a case study to Permaculture Works, and use it as a teaching tool on courses to provide a worked example of the design process. Permahaus was also an opportunity to share my insights as a permaculture designer in an applied context with other design professionals. |
5. Community building
"The active process of supporting supportive social networks".
|
How I meet it/where I evidence it
I have done this in two key ways: the Lilac Landscaping and EPT Partnership projects. I have also set up an International Teachers Group on Facebook for permaculture teachers across the world to provide mutual support.
|
6. Symmetry"The process of reciprocating support received from other permaculture individuals and networks"
|
How I meet it/where I evidence it
My MSc Thesis was designed to offer support to Low Impact Developers.
The European Permaculture Teachers' Partnership is all about providing support to individuals and networks of permaculture teachers across Europe. |
7. Evaluation & Costings"The process of increasing the knowledge & understanding of permaculture systems, such as their effectiveness and overall cost."
|
How I meet it/where I evidence it
The Church Fenton garden, Lilac Tree Plan, EPT Partnership and EPT UK Meeting designs were fully costed with detailed budgets.
